- Scope and content:
- The archive of the "Mantzaros" Philharmonic Society covers the entire period since its establishment in 1890 until now. It is over 80 metres long and divided into two sections. The music section contains music sheets and other items relating to the society's musical work, and the administration section contains documents pertaining to the operation of the society and its members. In the latter there are various items offering information on the Jews of Corfu who participated in the "Mantzaros" Philharmonic Society, either as students or as musicians, or as members of the society. There are two types of documents including this information: student rolls and registries of musicians and members. Some of these records include more than basic details like names and dates of birth: they contain notes with information on the lives of the people recorded, such as their profession, the reasons why they left the society or returned to it, etc. Further research on other types of documents would probably reveal more evidence regarding the relation of the "Mantzaros" Philharmonic Society with the Jewish community of Corfu.
- Archival history:
- The archive of the "Mantzaros" Philharmonic Society lies in the society's quarters. In the past years, the society has been conducting a coordinated effort aimed at its filing and preservation.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Philharmonic Societies, participating with their bands in the national and religious cermonies of the island, are one of the defining cultural features of Corfu. The "Mantzaros" Philharmonic Society is the second such society established in the town of Corfu in 1890. From the society's statutory book it seems that registration of members from all social strata has been encouraged, which partly accounts for the fact that since 1914 and until the post-war period it was the only society with students, musicians, and members who were Jews.
