- Scope and content:
- Anestis Makridakis's collection consists of 50 documents, mostly press clippings and articles from magazines from the 1940s to 1990. Most are from the 1990s. There are antisemitic texts (mostly letters from readers) from the 1990s, recollections by persons who lived during the Occupation, such as the theologian Nikolaos Emmanouil Zeugadakis, who in 1963 in the newspaper Mesogeios published excerpts from the diary he had kept during the Occupation on the arrest of the Jews of Chania and the demolition of the Synagogue. It also contains texts by local scholars on the history of the Jews of Crete, which were later copied by most of the writers who dealt with the subject, such as Ioannis G. Androulidakis and Makridakis himself.
- Archival history:
- Anestis Makridakis was a journalist and head of the press office for a state tourist service. The information comes from the archivists of the Historical Archive of Crete who, however, did not know exactly what this service was. Most probably, the collection of clippings about the Jews of Crete was compiled in the context of his duties in this service. The file containing the clippings reads: "Collection of Anesti Makridaki, director of the Press Office / Jews". Anestis Makridakis was an amateur historian and wrote several texts on local history.
