- Archival history:
- This collection was created and is kept by the Jewish community of Zagreb.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Jewish community of Zagreb was founded in 1806 by 70 settlers who came to Zagreb after the edict of tolerance was issued by emperor Joseph II. Due to social changes and the development of civic rights, the community grew, reaching its peak between the two world wars. In 1941 it comprised 11,000 members, who were organised through numerous cultural, charity, sport and other Jewish organisations. Only a quarter of its members survived the Shoah. Today the community has approximately 1,100 members and continues with its efforts towards preservation of Jewish identity, culture and tradition.
