- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Oldenburg department of justice, established in 1814, was the supervisory authority for the district and regional courts. In the reform of the judiciary in 1857, it was dissolved in favour of a higher regional court (Oberlandesgericht) and three superior courts in Oldenburg, Varel and Vechta. At the same time, district courts were established to prepare the definitive separation of the judiciary and the administration, which was completed after the implementation of the Reich Justice Constitution Act of 1879.
