- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Ilseder Hütte (Ilsede ironworks) was founded on 6 September 1858. It emerged from the mining and metallurgical company in Peine. In particular, after the founding of the Reich in 1871, the company expanded and stimulated the founding of other industrial enterprises, for example, the Peine rolling mills (1872), the Thomasstahlwerk (Thomas steel works) in Peine (1881), the Siemens Martin plant in Peine (1900-02). In 1937, large parts of the mine property were assigned to the Reichswerke Hermann Göring AG. During the Second World War, the steelworks avoided air strikes and dismantling and experienced another upswing. In 1970, Ilseder Hütte merged with the Salzgitter iron and steel works to form the Peine-Salzgitter AG steelworks. The structural crisis of the 1970s and the cessation of ore mining in 1977 led to the closure of the blast furnace plant in Ilsede in 1983. In 1989, Stahlwerke Peine-Salzgitter AG became part of Preussag AG (renamed Preussag Stahl AG in 1992). In 1998, the company became independent again under the name Salzgitter AG.
