- Administrative/biographical history:
- After the dissolution of the concentration camps in 1945, local concentration camp committees were formed in Lower Saxony on a private basis, but they were also given quasi-official powers. On 19 September 1945, the Braunschweig Ministry of State ordered that "official care centres for the victims of the Nazi terror" be set up by the district administrators and mayors. Within two months, the victims had to submit their requests for detention compensation to the committees. The prerequisite for compensation was recognition as a victim of Nazi persecution and repression measures. The compensation was mainly about material support. The Supplementary Act of 18 September 1953 to compensate the victims of Nazi persecution summarised all state laws. In the new version of 29 June 1956, it was called the German Federal Restitution Act (BEG) and regulates the claims of persons who were persecuted for their political convictions, on the grounds of race, conviction or belief and thereby to certain persons that had suffered property damage, in particular damage to life, body or health, assets and real estate, and professional and economic advancement. The reimbursement of assets under the Federal Refund Act (BRüG) of 19 July 1957 was processed by the relevant supervisory finance directorates. The BRüG is about the return of individual, identifiable property taken away due to National Socialist persecution measures on the grounds of race, religion, belief, nationality or political opposition or, if they no longer exist, the provision of compensation in value or damages.
