- With the founding of the State of Lower Saxony in 1946, all state archives of the previous territories were incorporated into the Lower Saxony Archive administration. The State Archives in Aurich, Bückeburg (from 1961), Hannover, Osnabrück, Oldenburg, Stade (from 1959) and Wolfenbüttel were initially independent higher state authorities, which were directly subordinated to the prime minister's office, which exercised the service and specialist supervision. The former Prussian State Archives of Hannover became the Lower Saxony State Archives of Hannover; on 1 March 1971 the designation was changed to "Main State Archives of Hannover" (HStA).
