The collection contains records relating to administration of offices; state and constitutional affairs of the prime minister and ministers; archives; radio and television; orders; titles and badges of honour; public security and order; budget and taxation; urban planning and housing; business inspectorate; health; schools; transport; economic affairs; agriculture; forestry; administration of justice; refugees, etc.
Of special interest to Jewish history are: exchange of information with Israeli archivists; appeals for legal assistance in the criminal case against Adolf Eichmann; support for the work of Yad Vashem, Jerusalem, in particular in the preparation of lists of names of all deported Jews; purchase of the microfilms of Jewish registers from the jurisdictional areas of the State Archives in Aurich, Hannover, Osnabrück and Wolfenbüttel, prepared shortly before the end of the war by the Gatermann Company, Duisburg-Hamborn; answering petitions to the prime minister mainly from the portfolio of the Minister of Food, Agriculture and Forestry A-L, including among others: petitions from the Central Council of Jews in Germany and the journalist Henryk M Broder on behalf of the former veterinarian emigrated from Romania, Dr. Henric Feinkuchen, whose naturalisation was rejected by the district of Bentheim; Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for, among others: Heinrich Brand, caretaker of the Jewish cemetery, Schwanewede; Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, including: Norbert Prager (born 17 January 1891), merchant in Hannover, head of the Jewish congregation in Hannover; correspondence with/on Israel, including: German Hospital Shaare Zedek in Jerusalem; German-Israeli Youth Encounter 16 March to 5 April 1972 in Osnabrück; exchange of information with Israeli archivists; correspondence with Israel; visits from Israel; 1972 Munich Olympics: attack by Arab terrorists on the night of 5-6 September 1972 on Israeli athletes in the Olympic Village in Munich.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- When the state of Prussia, like the German Reich, collapsed with the surrender on 7/8 May 1945 the Allies took power. Only gradually did Germans regain involvement in the administration. The state governing office (Oberpräsidium) developed into the backbone of the state administration in the province of Hannover. Hinrich Wilhelm Kopf (SPD) became the provincial governor (Oberpräsident) on 19 September 1945.
