The library’s holdings include records relating to the expansion of the book collection (including mandatory copies), maintenance of the manuscript collection, construction matters, training of library specialists, personnel files.
Of special interest are the personnel files of Dr. phil. Dr. h. c. Werner Kraft (born in 1891, library councillor, literary historian, writer) and Paula Blank (born in 1887, library secretary) who were forced to retire in 1933 due to their Jewish faith and the “Law on the Restoration of Professional Civil Service”. They fled to Israel in 1934 and 1935 respectively.
- Archival history:
- Before interlibrary loan and public use of the library could be resumed after the end of the Second World War, the evacuated book collections were returned and damage to the archive and library building was repaired. Since 1947, the library had been directly subordinated to the Lower Saxony Prime Minister Hinrich Wilhelm Kopf, who gave it the name "Lower Saxony State Library”. Since then, it has been systematically expanded. Until after the Second World War, it had not been decided whether the library was state property or Guelph private property. This obstacle to the development of the library under property rights was contractually regulated in 1955, after negotiations since 1947, in such a way that the Guelph house waived all property claims for the benefit of the state in exchange for compensation.
