The collection primarily contains files and maps that provide information about the first two decades of the army training ground and the district. In particular, it documents the immediate post-war period. In addition to documents relating to the creation of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial, it mainly contains documents pertaining to the refugee camp as well as reporting documents containing extensive evidence of refugees and forced labourers. Files of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp are not extant; they burned in 1945 along with the camp buildings.
The collection contains records relating to human resources; meetings of residents' associations; reporting; accommodation of refugees; building, including the evacuation of the Neu-Hohne camp; Bergen-Belsen Memorial.
Of special interest to Jewish history are: correspondence with the district of Celle on various matters, including: admission of released Poles and Jews in the district; postcards and photos of the memorial (circa 1950s to 1970s), including: the Kaddish, the Jewish lamentation of the dead; press reports about the former Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and related reactions from the district, in particular to a school radio program of the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation: Magazine entitled Die Zusammenarbeit. Organ der Gesellschaft für Christlich-Jüdische Zusammenarbeit ("Cooperation. Organ of the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation," March-June 1960); events and commemorations at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial, including: newspaper clippings, e.g. on the inauguration of the memorial; invitations; visitor requests; programs of the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation for a trip to Bergen-Belsen (1958); reporting of former Jewish inmates of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in DP Camp Hohne, including: newspaper clippings.
