The collection of the administrative district of Ebstorf (Hann. 74 Medingen-Ebstorf) comprises 135 files, mainly from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Some items date to the beginning of the 16th century, a tithe register of the monastery Ebstorf from 1470 (see: Medingen-Ebstorf 1267).
The collection contains records relating to general administration; taxes; levies and services; military matters; municipal matters; estates; police; commercial matters; agriculture; redemption; forestry; domain matters; hunting and building; church and school.
Of special interest to Jewish history are: report to the royal bailiwick regarding the conversion of Christians to Judaism; granting and extensions of protection for Jews; civil conditions of the Jews; assigning special last names to the Jews (Israelites) in the kingdom; Jewish servants and schoolmasters; immunity of the Jews in the principality of Lüneburg from the payment of the 100th pfennig of collateral inheritances to the church; granting and extending the protection of the Jews; commercial powers of the Jews; rabbis; failure to admit Jewish legal candidates as lawyers; "surplice fees" of Jewish residents; list of "protected Jews" ("Schutzjuden") living in Ebstorf.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The administrative district of Ebstorf, which emerged from a medieval Gogericht (inferior court of law) district, was not subject to any significant territorial changes until the 19th century. According to the administrative order of 1823, it included the hamlet (Flecken) of Ebstorf and 42 villages, which were divided in 6 Veeste, administrative districts oriented along the lines of the church parishes, but not always identical with them: Schwienauer Veest, Klei Veest, Hanstedter Veest, Wriedeler Veest, Munsterer Veest and Örreler Veest. Files of the present collection provide information about the origin and definition of the boundaries of the administrative districts.
