- Administrative/biographical history:
- The administrative district of Gieboldehausen was formed in 1859 from the abolished administrative district of Duderstadt, the previous smaller administrative district of Gieboldehausen and the bailiwick of Lindau of the former administrative district of Lindau (-Katlenburg). The administrative district of Gieboldehausen, as it existed from 1859 to 1885, integrated the Untereichsfeld - which until 1802 belonged to Electoral Mainz - except for the independent city of Duderstadt. The administrative districts of Gieboldehausen and Lindau originated in the usual way from Guelph castle districts of the late Middle Ages. The Gieboldehausen castle and bailiwick gradually came under authority of the archbishops of Mainz since 1334, Lindau castle and hamlet (Flecken) with the village of Bilshausen only in 1521. Because of their border and peripheral location, both administrative districts remained unchanged for a long time.
