- Archival history:
- This collection includes the file transfer of the Lüneburg administrative districts of Dannenberg and Hitzacker.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The nucleus of the Lüneburg administrative districts of Dannenberg and Hitzacker were the castles by the same name, first mentioned in the twelfth century, which later fell to the dukes of Lüneburg. From 1569 and 1591, respectively, the two administrative districts together with the districts of Lüchow and Warpke formed the principality of Dannenberg - a branch of the House of Lüneburg - and were administered from there after their assignment to Wolfenbüttel (1635). Dannenberg and Hitzacker were merged in 1859.
