- Administrative/biographical history:
- The administrative district of Alfeld existed only from 1836 to 1885. It emerged from the old Hildesheim administrative district of Winzenburg, with whose administrative area it was largely identical as of 1859, after the divisions of the 19th century were reversed. In 1802 it fell to Prussia as part of the secularised prince-bishopric of Hildesheim. The territorial development of the Alfeld administrative district in the 19th century shows the consequences of the restoration of the surviving administrative and judicial institutions of the Ancien régime after the wars of liberation.
