- Administrative/biographical history:
- The "Historical Commission for the Province of Hannover, the grand duchy of Oldenburg, the duchy of Braunschweig, the principality of Schaumburg-Lippe and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen” - as was its original name - was set up in 1910 at the prompting of Prof. Karl Brandi, Göttingen, and established under his chairmanship. From the outset, the commission's area of work included the former state of Lower Saxony, especially after the addition of the administrative district of Rinteln (county of Schaumburg), which was still part of the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau in 1911.
