4,42/3 is part of the collection of the Bremen Main Financial Directorate. It contains material from the office of estate utilisation (Vermögensverwertungsstelle), an office within the Directorate with the main task of administering estates of dispossessed inhabitants persecuted as Jews or “Gypsies“, especially of those who emigrated. The collection contains legal documents, minutes, lists and statistics as well as administration correspondence, for example:
No. 1 contains lists about Jewish estates and businesses in the town of Wesermünde.
No. 3 comprises material about the utilisation of formerly Jewish-owned jewels and gems.
No. 6 and 7 contain bailiffs' minutes.
No. 32 contains a register of expropriated estates in Bremen.
The most relevant section, however, are single case files of unique quality, extent and richness of detail. Examples include:
Nos. 36-84 comprise material about foreign exchanges formerly owned by Jews.
Nos. 92-104 comprise documents about estates and buildings formerly owned by Jews.
A register about single files regarding foreign exchange can be found in No. 29.
- Archival history:
- In the last weeks of the National Socialist regime it was decided to destroy the collections in order to destroy evidence. The American military government did, however, try to gather and preserve as much of the material as possible.
