- The collection contains a single file about Jewish “generalia” (No. 244), established by the department's population police. It consists of individual requests and legal conflicts between Jews and non-Jewish inhabitants. About half of the material is a separate sub-file collecting matters of “Schutzjuden” (protected Jews) living in the region. The files contain official documents written by Bishop Christian August and his officials, summarising the privileges of both “Schutzjuden” in the region in general as well as those of individual “Schutzjuden”.
- Archival history:
- The records in this collection came to the archive as part of the regular document transfer process.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The collection derives from the department of Eutin within the former bishopric/principality/province of Lübeck, not to be confused with the town of Lübeck. The bishopric had its origins in the 11th century. After the reformation it was the only protestant Fürstbistum (bishopric ruled by a monarch who fulfils both secular and clerical purposes). Due to the “Reichsdeputationshauptschluss“ of 1803 it was secularised like all remaining clerical estates in the Holy Roman Empire. The new principality of Lübeck with its administrative capital in the town of Eutin became an exclave of the duchy of Oldenburg. After the end of the German monarchy in 1918 it was referred to as province of Lübeck (Landesteil Lübeck) after the Grand Duke's withdrawal.
