The ducal archives comprise 195 linear metres of material from the 16th to 18th century. This extensive collection contains 37 files relevant for Jewish history. The published register (in three volumes) enables the finding of the individual files, which are mostly scattered throughout the large collection.
Most of the relevant material deal with individual requests by Jews living in the duchy, court trials as well as business and taxation investigations. The oldest relevant file (No. 172) contains correspondence with the Reichstag in 1576, concerning discussions about racketeering performed by Jewish merchants in the empire. Other relevant files can be found in trade policies (No. 3298, 3300, 3306, 3318, 3671) as well as the register of noble families, some of whom interacted with Jewish families (No. 6406, 6425, 6377, 6472, 6477). A curio can be found in No. 1087, court files bound in a book jacket taken from an old Hebrew manuscript.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf came into existence in 1544 when King Christian III managed to separate the region of Schleswig into three parts, of which the part surrounding Gottorf Castle was then ruled by Duke Adolf, a step-brother of the king. The new Duchy of Gottorf established its own archive where documents where stored until the Danish occupation of the region in 1713.
