The collection consists of the personal estate of Felix Epstein. Epstein (1882/1982) played an important role in the management of the hospital for decades. In addition to material arising from Epstein's activities as a member of the Board of Trustees, the collection contains documents he collected on the history of the hospital, while no private papers were found. Thus, it seemed justified to call the collection "Israelitisches Krankenhaus”.
The Israelitisches Krankenhaus (Israelite Hospital) delivered the collection as a deposit to the State Archives on 28 April 1983. At the time of transfer the state of the documents was variable. In addition to disordered papers, documents were found which Epstein had summarised in folders according to objective critera. The titles he had created, however, proved to be too inaccurate for indexing and for the most part had to be replaced. A few receipts, duplicates and copies from the holdings of the State Archives were discarded and returned to the hospital.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- In 1843 the Israelite Hospital grew out of several smaller predecessors and was newly established by a foundation of Salomon Heine. The hospital was extended again and again until 1933. In the years after 1933 the occupancy of non-Jewish patients declined sharply, so that the hospital had to move to smaller buildings in 1939. The foundations belonging to the hospital were dissolved in 1943. In 1946 another board of trustees was established, which was finally able to open a new hospital on Orchideenstieg in 1961.
