- Archival history:
- The files of the Jewish Congregation in Hamburg after 1945 are a special occurrence in the German-speaking area. The collection is not completely catalogued and can only be viewed with permission.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- On 8 July 1945 twelve survivors of the old Jewish congregation gathered in Hamburg to set up a working committee and a religious commission. The American Jewish Distribution Committee and the English Jewish Committee for Relief organised and financially supported the new congregation, which was officially founded on 18 September 1945. The congregation grew steadily and by 1947 already had 1,268 members. The number settled to between 1,350 and 1,400 members for the following decades. Today it is one of the largest Jewish congregations in Germany with 3,500 members.
