- Scope and content:
- The collection comprises general and specific files as well as a few war records from the First World War. Two indexes of Group D are of particular relevance for potential research on male Jews who were born between 1855 and 1896: D II covers the draftees of these years, D III the deferred ones. These series provide valuable information about the living conditions of these individuals, occasionally also documenting an emigration or a departure, sometimes to avoid an obligation.
- Archival history:
- The files of Hamburg conscripts born after 1896 were destroyed as part of the Versailles Peace Treaty in order to counteract the subsequent recruitment of new draftees.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- A Military Draft Commission, or four Military Draft Commissions between 1867 and 1914, had the task of registering the Hamburg citizens who were subject to military service. It ceased its activities in 1921.
