- Scope and content:
- Contrary to what may be assumed from the name of the collection, the files are not the records of a supervisory authority but exclusively series of personal files and records related to individual cases. The focus of these cases is on civil rights, protective associations, home law and Hamburg and German citizenship. Altona, Wandsbek and Harburg are mostly not included. With knowledge of the various forms of belonging to the State of Hamburg and taking into account other collections in which related documents have sometimes remained, the collection can be a rich source of Jewish history in Hamburg.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Decisions on inclusion in the so-called “nexus" of Hamburg (a form of belonging, depending on political systems) and dismissals from it were traditionally part of the powers of the Council (Senate), which later transferred civil rights and citizenship matters to various authorities, such as the “Weddeherren", the deputation for the acceptance of foreigners or the deputation for the acceptance of citizens. In 1864 the Wedde authority was responsible, in 1866 the civil registry office, in 1876 the supervisory authority for the registry offices, in 1913 the aforementioned authority in division of labour with the police department, 1924 the police department, 1945 the legal department - department for citizenship affairs, 1962 the internal affairs department - department for internal administration.
