- Jewish mothers with underage children had to turn to the secular authority after the death of their husband to regulate the care of minors since women were not allowed to take care of children by themselves. They were accompanied by a tutor and board members of the Jewish congregation. The registers and files of this collection can provide data on family constellations, especially for the period before the introduction of the registry of civil status in 1811 and the registry of births, marriages and deaths of the Jewish congregation in 1816. The inventory includes not only records but also case files for the period from 1832 to the late 19th century.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- First the entire council and from 1815 on the upper court acted as guardianship authority. In 1838 the guardianship deputation (Vormundschaftsdeputation) was founded. In 1883, the deputation was replaced by a guardianship authority (Vormundschaftsbehörde), which was also a guardianship court. In 1900, the guardianship authority became a management board of the judicial administration; the judicial function was assigned to the separate guardianship court. In 1928, the authority was renamed in guardianship office (Vormundschaftsamt) before it was dissolved in 1935. Its tasks were taken over by the district court (Amtsgericht).
