- Scope and content:
- The collection contains documents relating to all property purchases, sales and inheritance in Hamburg between 1248 and 1900. Even though Jewish citizens were not allowed to buy land before 1842, the files document cases with Jewish involvement because the Council had granted exceptions. Most of the time this process required a Christian advocate and intermediary, whose name will be listed along with the Jewish party. Personal information of the parties was collected and forms an important source about the legal status and their birth date in a time period were this data was not systematically collected.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Originally, the administration of mortgage lending was the direct responsibility of the Council, in the suburbs and in rural areas of the patrons or competent rural authorities (Landbehörde). In 1843, the bookkeeping in the city was transferred to mortgage officers instead of the proto-notaries. On 25 January 1964 the mortgage office (Hypothekenamt) was founded, which was directed by two senators.
