- Scope and content:
- This collection most likely contains files concerning Jewish families, but the catalogue is very generic and includes no file titles. A partial alphabetical name inventory exists which assists in working with this collection. Knowledge of antiquated legal terms helps with orientation in the finding aids. What has been preserved are mainly files from the period after 1815, mostly administrative files with books of ordinances and judgements, files created by the supervision of notaries and files from the area of jurisdiction, in this case first instance and appeal cases.
- Archival history:
- The files covering the years from 1575 to 1888 were destroyed and are only available on microfilm. Further files were destroyed by moisture while stored in the Börsenkeller (basement of the stock exchange).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The high court, Hamburg's court of second instance, existed from the Middle Ages to 1879. It was entirely formed by the Council or Senate. Only councillors (Ratsherren) could act as judges until 1859. The separation of powers was enforced in 1860. The Reich Justice reform (Reichsjustizreform) suspended the Supreme Court; it was replaced by the district court.
