- This series contains files of the highest imperial court (Oberstes Kaiserliches Gericht) about trials between the city of Hamburg and Hamburg citizens. 20 of the 388 cases concern Jewish accusants or defendants.
- Archival history:
- The Hanseatic files of the Reichshofrat were originally stored in Vienna, with only a small number of the records given to other European archives. In 1846 the 379 files concerning Hamburg were sent to the State Archive. In the beginning they were stored within the Reich Chamber Court collection before becoming their own record group.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Between 1498 and 1518 and again from 1527, the Reichshofrat was the highest governmental and imperial court in the whole empire. Until 1559 it was chaired by the Emperor himself or his Hofmarschall [Lord Chamberlain], afterwards it had its own president. The authority became a pure imperial authority and essentially an imperial court.
