- Scope and content:
- The record group is arranged into eleven subcategories, each of which potentially contains data about Jewish inhabitants. This is particularly the case for the inventory about "Common conditions of Israelites" (Bürgerliche Verhältnisse der Israeliten, Cl. VII Lit. Lb. Nr. 18) and Exercitium Religionis of the Jews (Excertitium Religionis der Juden, Cl. VII Lit Hf Nr. 5). The two groups are not clearly separated, for example "Excertitium Religionis" also contains information about Jewish rights of residence, which are traditionally a matter of "Common conditions". Overall this collection contains all the matters discussed by the senate and council, which included not only regional matters but also smaller quarrels, for example within the Jewish community.
- Archival history:
- This record group dates from the 12th century to 1928; until 1860 it was listed as "Rat" [council].
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The council did not only invest regional matters but also smaller individual cases, which are now a matter for authorities that were only established in Hamburg in the 19th century. Smaller conflicts in particular were brought to the judgement of the council, for example internal disputes and complaints of the Jewish community.

- System of arrangement:
- The organisation structure of this record stems from 1710, therefore the reference numbers of the specific files differ from other record groups within the archival structure. A record number contains five to six levels: Classes, Literae, Numeri, Volumina, Fascicula and sometimes Involcura. The titles of the files especially for the 18th century are at times vague. During the 19th to 21st century the titles were more extensive and therefore references to other records within the collection can be found in the inventory.
- Access, restrictions:
- Partially restricted; latest closure date: 31 December 2030.
- Finding aids:
- The inventory consists of 90 volumes, the main volumes are about Cl. VII Lit. Lb. Nr. 18 and Cl. VII Lit Hf Nr. 5. The indices of the senate minutes can help to find a mentioned person.
