- Scope and content:
- Section A1 of the Nienburg District and Town Archive comprises the documents of Nienburg's town administration until 1886. Sub-section A1 3 contans material about religious groups and congregations in the town of Nienburg. A1 3-30 is one of the most relevant collections concerning Jewish life in Nienburg in the time before 1866. The collection contains the letters of protection granted to Jews (“Schutzjuden“), permitting them to settle in Nienburg and granting them legal protection by the local duke. The oldest letter of protection is dated to 1681. This section includes applications for extended the state of protection (it was limited to 10 years and had to be extended individually). Furthermore, the file contains general material about the life of Jews in Nienburg, e.g. individual requests by Jews for permission to buy real estate or get married as well as documents of prosecution e.g. in cases of illegal door-to-door trading. The collection also contains (incomplete) annual reports about the situation of the Jews living in Nienburg.
