- Scope and content:
- The cases heard by the Jewish Court in Altona are listed in the main minute books, which are also referred to as Dajanim books (from Hebrew Dajan, pl. Dajanim: Judge). A subcategory to these files are the indices, which are also part of this collection. In terms of content, the main focus is on negotiations for violations of community discipline, such as disruptions of worship or absence.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Although Jewish law encompasses all areas of law, Jewish jurisdiction in Central Europe in early modern times was limited to disputes arising between Jews. In addition, cases involving life and limb were reserved for state jurisdiction. According to Jewish law, the court may consist of three civilians or three legally qualified rabbis. At the beginning of the existence of the Altona congregation the former variant existed more frequently but since the middle of the 17th century rabbis gained influence. The jurisdiction of the head of the congregation (=civilians) was limited to violations of congregational discipline.
