- Archival history:
-
The archive was founded in medieval times and some documents and files have been lost through fire, wars, sieges and fungal infestation. The collections comprise almost 200 linear metres and more than 90% are listed. They include the files of the magistrate until approx. 1945, the files of the Schwerin city council from approx. 1945 to approx. 1990, the files of the state capital Schwerin / departments from approx. 1990, files on schools, businesses; associations and federations, land registers and newspapers.
The material is arranged in different groups. Some of them are chronological, e.g. all holdings whose signature begins with the letter M belong to the period before 1945, all holdings from the time of the GDR have a signature R. The files are located at two locations: Johannes-Stelling-Str. 2 and Willy-Bredel-Str. 18 (signatures B, EK, R – request the inventory list on site).
Numerous land registers were closed in the GDR in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. These land registers and the related files concerning Schwerin were taken over by the City Archives in the early 1990s. A total of 20 linear metres of files and books, which are accessible through a database, are kept at the Willi-Bredel-Straße 18 branch office. The founding acts and building files form a complementary source.
