- Archival history:
- The archival collection (until 1945) of the Windthorst-Gymnasium (high school) in Meppen dates back to a Jesuit "high school Marianum" of the 17th century. The oldest records on the history of the Meppen Jesuit branch were probably lost partly during Mansfeld's campaign, partly caused by the Swedish occupation of Meppen, during each of which the Jesuits left the city. At least the founder of the school, P. Nikolaus Krebs, could no longer prove to the bishop of Osnabrück the lawful acquisition of the benefice of Aschendorf in 1643.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- With the National Socialist seizure of power, the school was redesigned in 1933 according to the Führer principle and Nazi ideology. In 1934, Arthur Wieferich, a staunch supporter of the NSDAP, became the principal of the institute, which had been called "Emslandschule, Oberschule für Jungen" since 1937. It became a high school specialising in foreign languages and grade 13 was abolishes. As in the First World War, the Second World War caused even more numerous casualties among teachers and students. High school students were often used as harvest helpers or anti-aircraft auxiliaries (Flakhelfer), in firefighting or the medical service.
