- Archival history:
- Some of the files came directly from the consistory into the State Archives (1872 and 1882), partly through the provincial consistory in Hannover, through the State Archives in Hannover, and via the Osnabrück government (1901-1918). It appears that a number of documents and records were extracted from material transferred by the consistory and assigned to the Rep 3 and Rep 100 holdings.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The establishment of the Protestant consistory in Osnabrück took place in 1651 based on the Capitulation Perpetua. The consistory was a clerical administrative and judicial authority for the members of the Augsburg Confession in the prince bishopric of Osnabrück with the exception of the city of Osnabrück, which had its own consistory (see collection Dep 3 b VI). In 1817, the Lower County of Lingen was also subordinated to the consistory, including members of the Reformed Church. Since the same time, for example, it has served de facto but without explicit order, also the district of Meppen. In 1848, the clerical jurisdiction was withdrawn from the consistory and marriage matters in 1869. Its dissolution took place by 1 July 1885. The ecclesiastical authority was transferred to the Provincial Consistory in Hannover, supervision of schools as well as the Sylvester fonds to the government in Osnabrück.
