- Archival history:
- The reference year is the year 1885, in which the administrative district (Ämter) organisation was abandoned and the district constitution was introduced. The files of the administrative district office from Rep 122 Lingen were sorted out and unified with the acc. 3a / 1948 and those of the war economy offices.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The administrative districts (Landkreise) were at the same time lower state administrative authorities (collection Rep 450) and local governments with limited self-government (collection Rep 451). The district order for the Province of Hannover came into force 1885 and led to the formation of ten districts (Landkreise) in the administrative district (Regierungsbezirk) of Osnabrück. In 1932, their number was reduced to eight by mergers. By their nature, the districts were at the same time the lower state administrative authority and local authority. At their head was the district administrators (Landräte) appointed by the king (after 1918 by the state government). As the organ of the state government, they conducted the business of the general state administration and the local police administration. The district administrative order applied in its basic features up to the "transition of the state district administrator rule to the districts [Kreise]" on 1 April 1946.
