- Administrative/biographical history:
- The administrative district of Neuenhaus, established in 1824, included the Lower County of Bentheim, the town and parish of Nordhorn, and the municipality of Wietmarschen. By royal ordinance of 18 April 1823, the County of Bentheim became a state sovereign territory of the Prince of Bentheim-Steinfurt. This meant the abolition of the Bentheim government (see Rep 325). Established in its place were a state sovereign's governor and a royal high commissioner (see Rep 340) assumed power and, subordinated to them (effective 1 September 1824), the two mediatised administrative districts (Mediatämter) Bentheim and Neuenhaus.
