- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Hannover administrative district of Grönenberg corresponded to the previous administrative jurisdiction of the Prince Bishopric of Osnabrück. In 1867, it was at the same time the seat of the Prussian district of Melle. After the end of French rule, the provisional government commission set up by the Electorate of Hannover for the principality of Osnabrück in 1814 reintroduced the administrative district structure. The regulation on the tasks of the administrative districts as administrative authorities subordinate to the Landdrostei (bailiwick) of Osnabrück was carried out by the order of 18 April 1823. Accordingly, the administrative districts were responsible for the administration in governance, police, domanial, cameral and consistorial matters as well as the administration of justice in the lower instance. In 1852, the administration of justice was transferred to the newly created district courts. The administrative district includes the bailiwicks of Melle (with the parishes of Melle and Oldendorf), Buer (with the parish of Buer), Riemsloh (with the parishes of Riemsloh and Hoyel), Neuenkirchen near Melle (parish of Neuenkirchen near Melle) and Wellingholzhausen (with the parishes of Wellinholzhausen and Gesmold). After the Prussian incorporation of the state in 1867, the administrative district of Grönenberg, the administrative district of Iburg and the city of Melle formed the district of Melle. With the district administrative order taking effect on 1 April 1885, the administrative district of Grönenberg was dissolved and incorporated into the district of Melle.
