- Administrative/biographical history:
- The two originally independent administrative districts of Wittlage and Hunteburg were managed jointly from the 16th century. The administrative district was responsible for the performance of sovereign and police tasks, the administration of the domanial estates and the collection of the state sovereign's income. In addition, it held the Brüchtengerichte (inferior courts of law) for minor police offences and the Höltingsgericht, a court for trademark offences. The administration was the responsibility of the district administrator (Drost), the execution of the business was provided by the treasurer (Rentmeister). Subordinate to them were the bailiffs, who were at the same time executive organs of the courts. The extent of the double administrative district corresponded essentially to that of the later former district (Altkreis) of Wittlage (until 1972). The administrative district of Wittlage consisted of the three bailiwicks and parishes of Essen, Lintorf and Barkhausen, the administrative district of Hunteburg of the bailiwicks Ostercappeln (with the parishes Ostercappeln, with the exception of the municipality, and Bohmte) and the bailiwicks and parishes of Hunteburg and Venne.
