- Archival history:
- The sovereign-police part of the Münster treasurer's registry was transferred to the Arenberg sub-prefects in 1809 when the state and local administration were separated.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The former administrative district of Meppen or "Emsland" of the prince bishopric of Münster coincides with the area of today's districts of Meppen and Aschendorf-Hümmling. Together with the administrative districts of Cloppenburg and Vechta, which later belonged to Oldenburg, Meppen formed the so-called "Niederstift" (lower bishopric) of the prince-bishopric.
