- Archival history:
- In the time of the Arenberg sovereignty (1803-1810), the documents concerning Meppen were selected only in the collections of the court (1803) and feudal chamber (1806). A further separation was carried out only in the years 1819-1829, especially after the Meppen administrative district fell under the sovereignty of the Hanoverian kingdom. Therefore, the files ceded to the house Arenberg in 1803 and 1806 mostly remained in the possession of Arenberg (see Th. Penners in Osnabrücker Mitteilungen 68, 1959) and today are located in Dep 62.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The Münster administrative district of Meppen or "Emsland" included the area of the later districts of Meppen and Aschendorf-Hümmling. It belonged until 1802 to the prince-bishopric of Münster. After its secularisation, the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss (Principal Decree of the Imperial Deputation) of 25 February 1803 assigned the administrative district to the Duke of Arenberg. With the abolition of the prince-bishopric of Münster, the successor states were in principle also entitled to the special files of the former Münster central authorities concerning their territorial parts, but the political turmoil of the following years prevented a quick realisation of this claim.
