- Scope and content:
- The collection includes the records of the County of Lingen, which fell to Brandenburg-Prussia in 1702, insofar as it concerns the Hanoverian Niedergrafschaft (lower county) from 1815 onward. Sub-collection I contains levies of the state archives Münster and the Freren district as well as files from Rep 100; sub-collection II contains the documents transmitted via the district of Lingen. It includes the following files that are of interest to Jewish history: II No. 4 edict collection for the County of Lingen, 1769-1774; II No. 51 Property purchases by Jews in the County of Lingen, 1791-1800; II No. 52 Annual directories of punishments in ceremonial matters, 1798-1807; Rep. 131 II No. 54 Establishment of schools in Jewish congregations 1806.
- Archival history:
- These files, separated as a result of the division of the county according to political-geographical pertinence, have passed through various authorities into the State Archives and have have been spread over various collections for a long period. Between 1968 and 1973, two sub-collections were formed, namely Rep 131 I from records of the State Archives of Münster and the Hanoverian administrative district of Freren and the Lingen records from the former Osnabrück government archive (Rep 100) and Rep 131 II with the files passed down from the Hanoverian administrative district of Lingen in the Prussian era.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The County of Lingen fell after the end of the Orange rule (see collection Rep 130) in 1702 to Brandenburg-Prussia. It remained in Prussian possession until 1808-9, then fell to the Napoleonic Grand Duchy of Berg and was divided in 1815: the southeastern parishes (Upper County - Obergrafschaft) returned to Prussia, while the lower county (Niedergrafschaft) was added to the Kingdom of Hannover. The present collection includes the records from the Prussian period, as far as the later Hanoverian lower county is concerned.
