- Archival history:
- The collection, referred to in the older literature as "Regional Archives" or "Section Archive", emerged from the governmental archives of the Osnabrück Landdrostei (bailiwick), which after the end of the Napoleonic era was the collection point for older administrative documents that were no longer needed. It therefore contains files of various provenances: archives of the princely and episcopal central administration, the cathedral chapter as a spiritual corporation and the secular estate and the secularised monasteries and religious foundations as well as registry material from the Hanoverian, Prussian, Westphalian and French authorities in Osnabrück. In addition, older files of the Prussian and Münster administration, which concern Lingen, Meppen and Emsbüren, were added to the government archives.
