- Archival history:
- The municipal archive was transferred to the State Archives by a deposit contract concluded on 1 November 1957.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- The town grew out of a medieval cemetery settlement around an early parish church, first mentioned in 1097. Since the sixteenth century (first time in 1563), the place is also referred to as a hamlet (Flecken) (Wigbold). In 1818, it received a municipal constitution; in 1929, Bramsche was granted the city rights, after parts of the neighbouring communities Hesepe, Achmer and Schleptrup had been incorporated on 1 April 1929. On 20 July 1818, the municipality of Bramsche was granted a magistrate constitution by Administrative Order of the Royal British Government in Osnabrück; previously, the administration had been in the hands of two civic directors and nine council members. The tasks of the newly established magistrate included the management of municipal affairs, in particular wealth, the assessment and distribution of municipal burdens and taxes, and the administration and supervision of municipal institutions. On the basis of the Hanoverian rural community ordinance of 4 May 1852, Bramsche received in the same year a revised constitutional statute, according to which, in addition to the magistrate, six civic directors acted as representatives of the municipal community (Weichbildsgemeinde). These were elected for a period of three years. This statute was slightly amended in 1861 and 1914. Thus, in 1914, the city council was expanded to four councilors. In addition, the mayor was henceforth elected solely by the civic directors.
