- Administrative/biographical history:
- As a result of the Congress of Vienna, Quakenbrück was incorporated into the Kingdom of Hannover and received a new city constitution. Furthermore, the city remained a regional commercial centre with a focus on tannery and brush, calico and silverware manufacturing. In 1875, the railway line from Oldenburg via Quakenbrück to Osnabrück was opened. The population increased in 1910 to about 3900. After the First World War and the subsequent supply crisis, the city recovered temporarily. In the last free elections on 6 November 1932, the NSDAP gained 650 votes, in the election on 5 March 1933, the National Socialists were the strongest party with 36.4 percent of the vote. Systematically, repressive measures were enforced against Jewish residents without resistance by the population. While in 1935 about 60 Jewish citizens still lived in the city, in May 1939 only ten Jewish residents were registered; by March 1941, no Jews lived in Quakenbrück. Since the regional reform of 1972, the city of Quakenbrück belongs to the district of Osnabrück and forms together with the municipalities of Badbergen, Menslage and Nortrup the joint municipality of Artland. In 1975 it had over 10,000 inhabitants for the first time and major companies settled there.
