- Administrative/biographical history:
- The town of Obernkirchen developed in the twelfth century around the Augustinerinnenstift (Augustinian nuns' convent) by the same name founded in 1167. In 1181, the convent received market and municipality (Weichbilde) rights for the town from Emperor Friedrich I. The village's close relationship with the convent remained intact until the Reformation. In 1565, the serfdom of the inhabitants was abolished by Count Otto zu Holstein-Schaumburg and the place was awarded hamlet (Flecken) rights following the model of Bückeburg. Although Obernkirchen was then raised in 1615 by Count Ernst to Holstein-Schaumburg to city status, this had little impact on the development of the town. At the beginning of the 19th century, it had only just over 1,000 residents. Decisive for the urban development was the intensified coal mining in the 19th century, which can be documented since the early modern era in addition to sandstone mining. The existing mineral deposits favoured the establishment of industrial enterprises. Glassworks, in particular, settled in the so-called Bergstadt (mining town). Within 100 years, the population of Obernkirchen quadrupled. However, the narrowness of the urban area between the border with Schaumburg-Lippe and the Bückeberg mountains prevented greater growth of the urban settlement. The further development of Obernkirchen thus unfolded in the context of a small town. In 1955 Beeke and Rösehöfe, in 1974 Gelldorf, Krainhagen, Röhrkasten, Vehlen and parts of Liekwegen were incorporated into the municipality.
