- Archival history:
- The main components of the estate archives are the estates of Ludwig von Hammerstein (1704-1786) and Börries von Hammerstein (1781-1844); the latter contains numerous acts of the Mairie of Canton Rodenberg. However, the estate archives also contains archival material about other family possessions (Grove, Heinsen, Hornoldendorf, Ölentrup, Rodenberg).
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Members of the Hammerstein family acquired several estates in Lower Saxony in the 17th century, which remained family property until the 20th century: In 1673, Major General Friedrich Christoph von Hammerstein bought the estate in Apelern from Andreas Eberhard von Stuben, who had inherited the estate from the bequest of Chancellor Anton von Wietersheim (died 1614) from Schaumburg. From that point the estate was in the possession of the von Hammerstein family without interruption.
