- Administrative/biographical history:
- Count Ernst zu Holstein-Schaumburg had a Latin school built in 1614 in his new residence Bückeburg, which lost its importance after Ernst's death (1622). The level of the school rose significantly when under the reign of Count Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe (1748-1777), the mathematician and philosopher Thomas Abbt as Patronus scholarum published school regulations for the high schools in Bückeburg and Stadthagen in 1766. In 1771, Johann Gottfried Herder succeeded him in the office. Under Count Philipp Ernst (1777-1787) and his successors, the modernisation was continued. In 1845, Bürgerschule (middle school) and Gymnasium (high school) were separated organisationally. The Gymnasium, which until then had been under the authority of the consistory, was subordinated in 1873 to the supervision of the Prussian provincial school board in Hannover. In 1876, the school received a new building in Ulmenallee. Since then, the school has been named after its founder, Prince Adolf Georg, "Gymnasium Adolfinum". At the beginning of the 20th century, a high school focusing on the sciences, mathematics and modern languages (Realgymnasium) was established in addition to the humanist branch; the classical humanist high school with Latin as the first foreign language ended in 1931. The Stadthagen students had to pass their final examination in Bückeburg until the Stadthagen school became a full-time institution in 1938. Since the late 1920s, the high school also accepted girls. In 1947, the Marienschule (named after Princess Maria zu Schaumburg-Lippe), which had existed since 1806, joined with the Adolfinum. In 1975, the school moved into the new building on Hofwiesen. Until 1974 the school was run by the country, since then the district.
