- Archival history:
- Because the old Schaumburg registry (joint archive, see collection L 1) remained in Bückeburg after the division of the county in 1648 but fell under the joint administration of Schaumburg-Lippe and Hesse-Kassel, it was closed; a new registry for the Schaumburg-Lippe government was set up. This new registry was initially the only one for the central administration and accordingly contained files of the entire state government and state administration. During the 18th century, powers were transferred to new central authorities. Around 1700 the financial administration was separated by the establishment of the Rentkammer (revenue office). The Justizkanzlei [judicial chancellery] became independent in 1728 and from 1765 legal matters were to be reserved for the department of justice. Furthermore, there were separate registries at feudal chamber (Lehnskammer) and consistory.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- In 1640, Count Otto V of Holstein-Schaumburg died of food poisoning without a male heir. His death was followed by years of contentious negotiations between his widow, Hessen-Kassel and Braunschweig-Lüneburg. In 1647 these negotiations led to an agreement. The northern part of the county fell to a side line of the Counts of Lippe. The city of Bückeburg, which had been converted into a residence in Schaumburg since the beginning of the 17th century, became the seat of the new state government.
