- Archival history:
- In 1610 Prince Ernst zu Holstein-Schaumburg built the "Academia Ernestina" in Stadthagen and moved the university to Rinteln in 1621, where it was housed in the Benedictine monastery. Under Napoleon's brother Jérôme, then King of Westphalia, it had to close its doors forever in 1810. In order to provide the city with some compensation for this loss, Rinteln citizens and councillors worked towards the establishment of a high school, which was finally realised under the Elector Wilhelm I, after the County of Schaumburg had again become part of Electoral Hesse in 1813. From 1816 a "school board" had been dealing with the planning and on 31 October 1817 - the 300th anniversary of the Reformation - the official establishment of the high school in the old university building took place; a day later it was inaugurated. It was founded as a high school specialising in the classics, although it also included modern languages.
