- The collection contains documents concerning the history of the city from the beginning until today, records of different creators (popes, kings, emperors, dukes, bishops and numerous clerical, aristocratic and civil drawers), records with other cities and sovereigns concerning alliances, inner-city constitutional charters and letters. Some documents relate to relationships between Jews and non-Jewish people such as testaments, legal documents and edicts.

- The chronologically ordered collection essentially contains the documents received from the city and the Weichbilde (municipal area) until the loss of the independence of the city in 1671. The collection is continuously supplemented by documents with a representative character, e.g. relating to town twinning.
