- Administrative/biographical history:
-
The Arrow Cross Party (also known as Hungarist Movement) was the most popular right-wing extremist movement during the Horthy regime from the late 1930s, led by former military officer Ferenc Szálasi. After Horthy’s attempt to extricate Hungary from war on 15 October 1944, they assumed power with Nazi support and reigned until April 1945, when the entire territory of Hungary was occupied by the Soviet Red Army and the war ended.
Following the takeover of the Arrow Cross Party, the Foreign Ministry continued to work along the same tasks and competencies. In November 1944, with the Red Army approaching, all offices of the ministry were evacuated to the town of Szombathely by the western border of Hungary. The Arrow Cross Ministry of Justice was headed by Gábor Kemény (1910-1946), who was sentenced to death and executed after the war.
