The fonds of the records of the Ministry of the Interior are among the key collections pertaining to the history of Hungarian Jewish communities in the National Archives. The General Administrative Records between 1867 and 1938 require file-level research, as the cases of Jewish citizens were not handled separately. Jewish-related records from this period include the cases of magyarisation of names, citizenship cases, conscription of soldiers and other military matters, supervision of associations and social organisations, press regulations, right of assembly, construction regulations, administration of trades and commercial matters, matters of funds, banks and other financial institutions, relations with religious denominations, issues of community taxation, school matters, including permits and financial support, matters of physicians and pharmacists, trade permits and various other matters of Jewish businesses.
The material from the years 1938-1944 include the following thematic units: Preparation of acts – Jewish matters, including proposals for anti-Jewish laws and decrees and reports of anti-Jewish policies of other countries (fasc. 2804), the implementation of Jewish laws in the occupied territories (fasc. 2840), exemption cases (fasc. 2855), citizenship cases of Jews, various Jewish matters of the county and city administration, records concerning the implementation of the “Jewish laws” and instances of bureaucratic antisemitic measures, including the withdrawal of trade licences and permits, quitting rental agreements of Jews, exclusion of Jews from the municipal committees and social organisations, registration and expropriation of Jewish landholdings; administrative procedures against Jewish communities (fasc. 2861 and passim, fasc. 3120-3141), wartime municipal administration (fasc. 3573) law enforcement, residence permits, repatriation and passport issues, fasc. 3606- 3618), police regulatory matters, including cases of corruption, supervision of associations and social organisations, internment (fasc. 3875-3988), personal files of internees, registration and card indexes (fasc. 3989-3999), matters of pharmacies and pharmacists, including the withdrawal of the permits of Jews (fasc. 4231-4241), health care administration, including the issues of Jewish doctors assigned to labour service (fasc. 4250), expulsion of Jewish patients from the hospitals, confiscation of the medical equipment of Jews, lists of Jewish patients of Budapest hospitals, November 10, 1944 (fasc. 4275), assignment of Jews to labour service (fasc. 4316).
- Archival history:
-
The general records of the Ministry of the Interior were obtained by the Hungarian National Archives in several phases: the records of 1867 to 1892 in 1924, the records of 1893 to 1896 in 1928, and the records of 1893 to 1944 in 1950. In 1927, a considerable part of the general records were handed over to Czechoslovakia according to an agreement on archival record exchange. These records are held in the Slovakian State Archives in Bratislava.
During WWII, the collections of the Ministry of the Interior, especially the general records were severely damaged. With the Red Army approaching Budapest in December 1944, all departments of the Ministry were evacuated to Sárvár in Western Hungary.
- Administrative/biographical history:
- Created by Acts III of 1848 and VIII of 1867, the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior operated from 11 March 1867 until the end of March 1945. Its sphere of jurisdiction included all internal matters of the country, public law, law enforcement, health care and social network as well as personnel matters. Besides, the Ministry of the Interior served as supreme authority over the entire administration of the country and the authority of third instance of all administrative matters. The sphere of action and tasks of the Ministry of the Interior was extended several times: in 1867, the Ministry had 10 departments; by 1944 it had 22.
